The JAG provides a range of services to the UK endoscopy community. These services include:
Endoscopy Training Standards
The JAG, on behalf of its constituent bodies, the Royal Colleges of Physicians, Surgeons, Radiologists and General Practitioners and in association with the BSG and Royal College of Nursing defines the standards for the training of all endoscopists, regardless of the professional organisation to which they belong. These include: physicians, surgeons, general practitioners, radiologists and nurse endoscopists.
Certification of Endoscopy Training
The JAG certifies the training in endoscopy modalities for trainees upon production of specified portfolio documentation. This includes: a logbook of procedures, basic endoscopy course participation, summative DOPS with a score of 3 or 4 on all indicators, audit data and a declaration signed by the trainee’s supervisor. A JAG certificate in the specified modality(ies), signed by the JAG Chairman is issued to all trainees where the requirements are satisfactorily satisfied.
Certification of Endoscopy Units
The JAG quality assures all aspects of endoscopy units to ensure policies, practices and procedures are safe and compliant with JAG, BSG and other national guidelines for endoscopy. These aspects include, adequate unit staffing, training, decontamination, a regular rolling audit programme is in place and is being undertaken satisfactorily and that patient’s privacy and dignity is being adequately maintained at all times.
Approval of Courses
The JAG approves the training courses for all endoscopy modalities. Endoscopy Units that run courses are encouraged to submit details of the course requirements to JAG. Once approved, units will be entitled to advertise these courses nationally on the JET’s website
Tailored Support
Following the drive to have all acute endoscopy units JAG accredited it has become apparent that several units are in need of refurbishment, reconfiguration or new build. A tailored support package from the JAG is available whereby senior JAG Assessors are available, on behalf of the JAG, to provide advice on getting units compliant with the current JAG standards, new HTM 01/06 decontamination standards and the recent same sex accommodation guidelines and make recommendations to hospital management.
