The prime role of this group was developmental, in gaining consensus on the appropriate quality standards for independent endoscopists from all professional backgrounds. Independent means certified, competent, and practising independently without supervision. Work focused on revalidation and recertification for endoscopists, and involved liaison with the Royal Colleges and specialist societies, as well as the GMC. Both standards and the metrics to measure by were key to this development.
This group’s remit also included advising on the standards for the BCSP colonoscopists, including assessor performance and training.
On 26 May 2011 the JAG Committee decided that the remit and work of this group should be subsumed into the QA of Training and Units Working Groups and this would be enacted in the coming weeks. Both Working Groups are developing the work started by this Working Group as part of their respective Training and Unit remits.
