Types of Unit

The JAG recognises and certifies endoscopy units from all healthcare sectors. The types of Units we certify are;

  1. NHS Acute General Hospital Endoscopy Units; provides (and teaches) all the common diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures

  2. NHS Community Units/treatment centres; provides a service for basic diagnostic endoscopy performed on an out-patient basis. Teaching for common diagnostic endoscopic procedures can occur in this setting.

  3. NHS Office/clinic; provides a service for basic diagnostic endoscopy performed on an out-patient basis. performed outside of any form of hospital

  4. Independent Sector; provides a service for all the common diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures privately. Teaching for diagnostic endoscopic procedures does not occur in this setting.

Currently each Unit receives five years of recognition before being required to re-apply. The introduction of a more robust certification process, the JAG Visit process, means that a high proportion of Units in the NHS have been given extended temporary JAG Certification pending a JAG Visit. The standards required for all Units are provided in our policy section. Please see JAG Visit guidelines for Units.
