Tenure
The tenure of JAG membership is for a maximum period of three years with a further single three-year extension. The tenure of the Chairman may be extended by a maximum of two further years to take account of taking up office late in the normal three/six year tenure and in order that he/she may spend a useful period in office.
Selection of the Chairman
The Chairman of the JAG is elected by members from existing statutory membership. Ideally, the Chairmanship should alternate between the statutory member organisations.
Secretariat
The JAG Secretariat will be provided by one of the Colleges/Joint Committees.
Procedure for new or replacement members
The JAG office will contact the relevant college/Joint Committee to request nominations for new or replacement members, in accordance with the above regulations. If JAG guidance regarding a required clinical or academic bias has been offered, this will be specified.
Voting
Members are entitled to vote where this is necessary. Co-opted members have no vote.
Notes:
- For representatives of nominating bodies whose membership is derived from office, the tenure of Membership is to be for the duration of that office or three/six years in accordance with the rules of tenure above.
- The vacancy thrown up by the appointment of the Chairman may be re-filled by the relevant nominating body. This is to allow the Chairman to act independently of his/her constituency and to provide stability and consistency.
- Where there is a number (1 or 2) shown against the end of tenure date – this indicates (1) the end of the first three-years or (2) the end of the second three year term as specified in the rules of tenure above.
