JAG has released new Safe Staffing Guidance for UK endoscopy services, effective from March 2026. This guidance provides a robust framework to help organisations demonstrate safe, sustainable staffing levels as part of JAG accreditation.
Ensuring appropriate workforce levels is fundamental to delivering safe, high quality patient care. The new guidance document outlines safe staffing principles, expectations and requirements for meeting and evidencing the JAG workforce standards.
Key elements of the guidance:
• core principles of safe staffing in endoscopy
• clear expectations for evidencing safe staffing
• workforce planning methodology
• minimum staffing expectations by clinical area
While JAG does not mandate exact staffing numbers, services must be able to evidence safe staffing to meet accreditation standards 10.5 and 10.6. This new guidance supports services in demonstrating compliance, planning for future demand and maintaining patient safety. It also aligns with wider national recommendations from the Royal College of Nursing, British Society of Gastroenterology and other professional bodies.
