Updates to JAG endoscopy pathways
23 September 2022

Existing pathways will be changing

Updated pathways to launch on JETS

From 30th September 2022, several updates to existing endoscopy pathways will be made live on the JETS system. The updates can be summarised as follows:

COLONOSCOPY

The JAG Training Committee have agreed that a single colonoscopy pathway is to replace the existing dual certification pathway represented by provisional and full certification stages. Included among the new KPIs that need to be met as part of this new pathway is a minimum total lifetime procedure count of 280 procedures and the completion of 5 reflection tools.

If an individual has already been awarded certification for provisional colonoscopy, they will have a 12 month window from the 30th September 2022 to complete their full colonoscopy certification on the existing pathway.  See below for further information about the criteria for transition.

OGD

The JAG Training Committee have agreed a number of modifications to the KPIs on the existing OGD pathway. These include a minimum total lifetime procedure count of 250 and the completion of 5 reflection tools.

FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY

The JAG Training Committee have agreed a number of modifications to the KPIs on the existing flexible sigmoidoscopy pathway. These include a minimum total lifetime procedure count of 175 and the completion of 3 reflection tools.

REFLECTION TOOL

A recent update to JAG endoscopy training consensus statements highlighted the need to engage in reflective practice. To encourage trainee endoscopists to incorporate reflection within their practice, a procedure development reflection tool has been created which incorporates trainees’ most recent procedural data from JETS ePortfolio. The reflection tool consists of a series of short questions prompting the trainee to reflect on their most recent procedural KPI data.

NEW PATHWAY TRANSITION PROCESS

To support the transition over to the new pathways, the following criteria has been agreed:

TO REMAIN ON EXISITING PATHWAY: All trainees working towards certification in any of the above modalities with 50 or more procedures performed within the last 12 months from 30th September 2022; will remain on the existing pathway and meet the existing KPIs to achieve certification.

TO TRANSITION TO THE NEW PATHWAY:
All trainees working towards certification in any of the above modalities with less than 50 procedures performed within the last 12 months from 30th September 2022, will move across to the new pathway and will need to fulfil the new pathway KPIs in order to certify.

As noted above, for those who have completed the provisional colonoscopy pathway and have been granted certification, there is a 12 month window to allow for completion of full colonoscopy certification on the existing pathway from 30th September 2022. If full colonoscopy is not completed within this timeframe, they will transition over to the new colon pathway.
